Ledger.com/Start® | Getting started — Ledger Support

Congratulations. By landing here, you’ve taken the first decisive step toward true financial sovereignty. This isn't just about buying a device; it’s about claiming ownership. At Ledger, we provide the tools—the most secure hardware wallets in the world—but the power and control belong entirely to you.

This page is your launchpad. We’ll guide you through the essential first steps to set up your Ledger device with confidence and security. Think of it as the foundational chapter of your new digital asset story.

The Ledger Promise: Security First, Always

Before we begin, understand the core principle behind your Ledger device: Isolated Security. Your private keys—the cryptographic secrets that control your crypto assets—are generated and stored in a certified secure chip (like the one in your passport) inside your Ledger Nano. They never leave the device. Every transaction must be physically confirmed by you, pressing the buttons on the device itself. This means even if your computer is compromised, your assets remain secure.

Your journey follows three pillars:

  1. Set Up: Initialize your device and create your unique recovery phrase.
  2. Secure: Learn and practice uncompromising safety protocols.
  3. Explore: Connect to the ecosystem and manage your assets.

Phase 1: Unboxing & Initial Setup

What You’ll Need:

  • Your new Ledger Nano S Plus, Nano X, or Ledger Stax.
  • The included USB cable.
  • A computer or smartphone.
  • Critical: A pen and your Ledger Recovery Sheet (from the box). Never store your recovery phrase digitally.

Step-by-Step:

  1. Connect & Power On: Plug your Ledger device into your computer. Follow the on-screen prompts to select a PIN code. This PIN is your first line of physical defense.
  2. The Most Important Step: Your Recovery Phrase. Your device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase. This is not a password. This IS your master key. Write each word in order on your Recovery Sheet. Verify it carefully on the device screen.
  3. The Golden Rule: Never, ever digitize this phrase. No photos, no cloud notes, no typing it. The sheet is physical, and its security is your responsibility. Store it like the most valuable document you own.

Phase 2: Installing Ledger Live & Adding Assets

Ledger Live is your secure command center. It’s the interface where you view your portfolio, install apps, and initiate transactions—but it never touches your private keys.

  1. Download: Only from Ledger.com. Never trust search engine ads for downloads.
  2. Connect & Authenticate: Open Ledger Live, connect your device, and follow the setup. Your device will be authenticated as genuine—a crucial step to prevent phishing.
  3. Install Asset Apps: Your Ledger device manages assets via small apps. Go to “My Ledger” in the app, and install apps for Bitcoin, Ethereum, or any other supported crypto. These apps are lightweight and safe.
  4. Create Your First Account: Follow the prompts to add a crypto account. Ledger Live will derive a public address for you. Always verify the receive address on your device’s screen before receiving funds.

Phase 3: Practicing Proactive Security

Setting up is just the start. Maintaining security is an ongoing practice.

  • Verification is Non-Negotiable: Every time you generate a receiving address, verify it matches on your device screen. Every time you send a transaction, verify the amount and address on your device screen. This defeats malware.
  • Beware of Phishing: Ledger will never email, text, or call you asking for your recovery phrase, PIN, or to “validate” your wallet. Ignore and report such attempts.
  • Firmware Updates: Keep your device firmware and Ledger Live updated via official channels. These updates contain vital security improvements.
  • Explore & Learn: Use the “Discover” section in Ledger Live to safely connect to Web3 applications, staking, and NFT platforms through your secure device.

You Are Now in Control

This transition to self-custody is powerful. With it comes a new level of responsibility and freedom. You are no longer a customer of a bank or exchange; you are your own bank. Your Ledger device is your vault, and you hold the only key.
